How to Choose an HVAC Air Filter

The right HVAC filter isn't simply the one with the biggest number on the package. Your system needs a filter it can use properly.

Start with size

Use the filter dimensions specified for your HVAC equipment or filter cabinet. Don't force an incorrect size into place.

Understand filtration ratings

Filters may use rating systems that indicate how effectively they capture particles. Higher filtration can be useful, but it also creates more airflow resistance, and your HVAC system has to be able to handle the filter.

Don't automatically choose the highest rating

More filtration isn't always better for every system. If you're considering a substantially more restrictive filter, check the equipment requirements or ask an HVAC professional.

Household conditions matter

You may care more about filtration if your home has pets, high dust, allergy concerns, smoke, or other airborne particles. Health-related questions belong with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Replacement frequency

There's no universal schedule. Filter life depends on filter type, system runtime, household conditions, pets, and dust. Inspect the filter and follow the equipment and filter manufacturer's guidance.
