Why Are My Lights Flickering?

Start by figuring out how much of the house is affected. One flickering light can have a very different cause from several rooms flickering together.

One light flickers

Make sure the bulb is appropriate for the fixture and properly seated. If the problem continues with a known-good bulb, the fixture, switch, or connection may need attention.

Several lights flicker

Notice whether it happens when a large appliance or the HVAC system starts. A brief change is not the same as persistent or severe flickering.

Whole-house flickering

Widespread or worsening flickering deserves professional attention. The cause may be inside the home's electrical system or in the utility supply.

Watch for other symptoms

Take flickering more seriously when it comes with a burning odor, buzzing, hot outlets, repeated breaker trips, dimming, or partial power loss.

Don't diagnose wiring by trial and error
