Why Won't My Garage Door Open?

A garage door that won't open may have an opener problem, a power issue, a door problem, or broken hardware. Start with the simplest checks.

Does the opener respond?

Try the wall control. If the wall control works but a remote doesn't, the issue may be the remote rather than the door.

Does the opener have power?

Check whether the opener is plugged in and whether normal household power is available. If a breaker repeatedly trips, stop resetting it.

Is the door locked?

Some doors have manual locks. Make sure one hasn't been engaged.

Does the opener run but the door doesn't move?

Stop repeatedly activating it. The opener may have disconnected from the door, or a door component may have failed.

Look at the springs

From a safe distance, look for an obvious gap or separation in a torsion spring above the door. Don't touch or attempt to adjust it.

Is the door extremely heavy?
