Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Fall is a good time to prepare the house for colder weather and reduced daylight.

Heating system

Before regular heating use, check the filter, make sure vents are open and unobstructed, and pay attention to unusual odors or sounds.

Exterior

Look for loose siding, roof damage, damaged exterior trim, gaps around doors, and window problems.

Gutters and drainage

Keep water moving away from the areas where it can cause problems.

Plumbing

Prepare outdoor plumbing for freezing conditions when appropriate for your climate.

Pests

Cooler weather sends rodents and other pests looking for shelter. Inspect common entry areas.

Safety equipment

Follow manufacturer instructions for testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

Garage

Check garage-door operation and weather seals.
