A countertop needs to do more than look good under showroom lighting. Think about how you cook, clean, and actually use the kitchen.

Ask how you actually live

Do you cook frequently, use heavy cookware, have children, want minimal maintenance, care strongly about natural variation, set hot cookware on counters, or need stain resistance?

Common material categories

Options may include natural stone, engineered stone, solid surface, laminate, wood, porcelain, and other specialty surfaces. Each has tradeoffs.

Ask about staining

Don't assume every stone or manufactured surface responds to stains the same way. Ask about the exact product.

Ask about heat

Some materials and finishes tolerate heat differently. Use trivets where recommended.

Look at a larger sample

Small samples can hide pattern variation, veining, and color changes. This matters especially with natural materials.

Don't forget the edge and sink

Countertop planning includes edge profile, sink type, faucet holes, backsplash, overhangs, and seams.

Questions for the fabricator or installer

• Where will seams be?
• How is the sink supported?
• What maintenance is required?
• Does the material require sealing?
• What is covered by warranty?
• What happens if the walls aren't straight?
