Kitchen Remodel Planning Checklist

Use this checklist before demolition begins.

Goals

What doesn't work now? What must improve? What would simply be nice to have?

Layout

Are appliances staying? Is the sink moving? Are walls changing? Is the island changing? Are doorways changing?

Cabinets

Reuse, reface, or replace? Any storage changes? Adding a pantry?

Countertops

Material, edge, sink, backsplash, seams.

Appliances

Confirm actual appliance dimensions before cabinetry and countertops are finalized.

Electrical

Plan outlets, lighting, appliance requirements, and under-cabinet lighting.

Plumbing

Determine whether sinks, dishwashers, or other plumbing fixtures are moving.

Ventilation

Don't forget the range ventilation strategy.

Flooring

Choose the flooring and coordinate installation timing.

Temporary kitchen

Plan how you'll handle food, coffee, refrigeration, dishes, and cleanup during construction.

Final documentation

Before work starts, make sure you understand the scope, materials, allowances, payment schedule, change-order process, estimated sequence, and cleanup responsibilities.
