What Is Scratching in My Attic?

Scratching, scurrying, or thumping overhead can come from several animals, and the sound alone usually isn't enough to identify which one. Timing and physical evidence help.

When do you hear it?

Notice whether the activity happens mostly at night, around sunrise or sunset, during the day, or in certain weather. Different animals keep different schedules.

Don't immediately enter the attic

Attics can contain exposed wiring, weak walking surfaces, contaminated insulation, animal waste, and defensive wildlife. You don't need to crawl up there just to prove something is present.

Inspect the exterior

From the ground or another safe location, look for damaged vents, openings at roof edges, gaps in exterior construction, damaged soffits, and other possible access points. Don't climb onto a roof without the right equipment and experience.

What else should I look for?

Droppings, nesting material, chewed materials, disturbed insulation, odors, and visible entry damage all count as evidence.

Don't seal an animal inside

If wildlife is actively using an opening, closing it without knowing what's inside can create a bigger problem, and there may be young animals present.

When should I call someone?

Wildlife help makes sense when:

• You can't identify the animal.
• It's inside an inaccessible area.
• There may be a nest or young.
• The entry point is on a roof or another dangerous location.
• The animal may be aggressive.
• Contamination or damage is extensive.
