Suburban home with a well-kept lawn and two-car garage

There's no reliable universal lifespan for siding. Material matters, but so do installation, weather, maintenance, and exposure.

Don't replace siding because of a birthday

Age is useful context. Condition matters more. Look for cracks, loose sections, rot, warping, water damage, repeated repairs, and coating failure.

Different sides can age differently

One side of a house may get more sun, wind, rain, irrigation, or impact than another. Inspect the whole exterior.

Maintenance affects service life

Some materials require painting, sealing, caulk maintenance, and cleaning. Others need less routine finish maintenance.

Installation matters

Even durable siding performs poorly when water management is incorrect, clearances are wrong, fastening is inappropriate, or flashing is missing or poorly integrated.

When does age matter?

Age becomes more meaningful when it comes with widespread deterioration or recurring repairs.
