Why Does My House Smell Musty?

A musty smell usually means moisture deserves investigation. It doesn't tell you exactly where the moisture is.

Start with the strongest area

Walk through the house and find where the odor is most noticeable. Check bathrooms, closets, under sinks, laundry rooms, basements, crawlspace access areas, around windows, and rooms with previous water damage.

Look for moisture clues

Watch for stains, peeling paint, swollen materials, condensation, damp carpet, visible mold, and leaks.

Don't cover the smell

Air freshener can hide an odor. It doesn't remove the moisture source.

What if you can't see anything?

Moisture can hide behind finishes or underneath materials. A persistent odor after the obvious sources are ruled out may justify a more thorough inspection.
