Installation matters

A high-quality window can still perform poorly if the opening isn't prepared and managed correctly. Ask how the installer will handle existing window removal, opening preparation, water management, flashing, air sealing, and exterior and interior trim.

Replacement styles

Projects may use different replacement approaches depending on the existing opening and its condition. Ask the installer what will remain and what will be removed.

Energy performance

Window labels help compare products, but don't assume new windows will produce a specific energy-bill reduction. Actual results depend on the existing windows, climate, house construction, installation, HVAC, and occupant behavior.

Don't ignore water problems

If a window has been leaking, find out whether the surrounding framing, drywall, trim, or insulation has also been affected.
