Why Is My Refrigerator Leaking Water?

Water around a refrigerator can come from several places. Before assuming the appliance has failed, find out whether it has a water supply and where the moisture first appears.

Does the refrigerator have an ice maker or water dispenser?

If so, inspect the visible portions of the water-supply connection for moisture. Don't pull hard on a connected refrigerator or force an old valve.

Is water collecting inside?

Water under drawers or inside the cabinet can point to a drainage or condensation issue. The owner's manual will have model-specific troubleshooting.

Is the freezer producing excess ice?

Unusual frost or ice can contribute to water appearing when it melts.

Could the water be coming from somewhere else?

Check nearby plumbing, dishwasher connections, sink plumbing, flooring, and the wall. Water travels, and the puddle isn't always directly below its source.

Protect the floor

Dry the water promptly. Repeated moisture can damage some flooring and cabinetry.

Consider appliance or plumbing help when:
