What's the Difference Between Concrete Resurfacing and Replacement?

Resurfacing improves the surface of suitable existing concrete. Replacement removes the existing slab and creates a new one. They solve different problems.

Resurfacing

May be considered when the existing slab remains sufficiently stable but the surface has deteriorated.

Replacement

Becomes more relevant when concrete has major movement, severe settlement, extensive failure, or conditions that resurfacing can't correct.

Appearance isn't enough

A worn surface can look bad while the slab remains stable. A relatively intact surface can hide movement underneath.

Ask why one method is recommended

A contractor should be able to explain what resurfacing can and cannot correct.
