Why Does My AC Keep Turning On and Off?

Air conditioners are supposed to cycle. The concern is a system that starts and stops far more often than usual without bringing the house to a comfortable temperature.

Start with the filter

A badly restricted filter interferes with normal airflow and operation. Inspect it and replace or clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Check the thermostat

Make sure something unusual isn't influencing it. Direct sun, a nearby heat source, or another local temperature condition can skew what the thermostat senses.

Is the house actually reaching temperature?

This matters. Normal cycling after the house reaches the set temperature is different from repeated short cycles while the house stays uncomfortable.
