Why Is My AC Running Constantly?

An air conditioner running for a long stretch isn't automatically broken. In very hot weather, long run times are normal. The more useful question is whether the system is actually keeping up.

Compare the temperature

Look at the thermostat. Is the house slowly cooling, holding near the set temperature, or getting steadily warmer? That pattern tells you more than run time alone.

Check the filter

Restricted airflow makes the system work harder. Inspect the filter and service it if needed.

Check the vents

Make sure supply and return areas aren't blocked.

Think about heat entering the house

Strong sun through windows, doors that open frequently, and unusual indoor heat loads all increase how hard the system has to work.

Did something change?

If the AC handled similar weather fine in the past but suddenly can't keep up, a maintenance or equipment issue becomes more likely.

When should I schedule service?

Consider professional evaluation when:
