A kitchen island is useful only if the room has enough space for people to move and work around it comfortably. Don't add one simply because modern kitchens often have them.

Think about the paths between the refrigerator, sink, range, pantry, and doors.

Open appliances

Make sure appliance and cabinet doors can open without creating conflicts.

What will the island do?

Possible functions include prep, seating, storage, a sink, cooking, and serving. The purpose should determine the design.

Utilities increase complexity

Adding a sink, dishwasher, cooking appliance, or electrical features changes the project.

Consider a table or movable island

A permanent built-in island isn't the only option.
