What's above the stain?

Consider whether the area above contains roof, a bathroom, plumbing, HVAC equipment, or attic space.

Does it happen after rain?

A stain that appears or grows after rain makes exterior water entry more likely. That still doesn't prove the roof covering itself is the source.

Does it happen when plumbing is used?

If moisture appears after showering, flushing, running a sink, or using an appliance, plumbing deserves investigation.

Is HVAC equipment nearby?

Condensate problems can also create ceiling moisture.

Don't just paint over it

A dry stain can be cosmetic after the source is fixed. A growing or recurring stain means the moisture source still needs attention.
